The first and inaugural season of the Canadian competitive reality television series MasterChef Canada, featuring Michael Bonacini, Alvin Leung and Claudio Aprile premiered on CTV on January 20, 2014, concluding on April 28th with Chinese Canadian chemical engineering student Eric Chong winning the inaugural season. At the age of 21, he held the record as the youngest winner of MasterChef Canada at the time of his victory. His record remained until 2018, when he was surpassed by 19-year-old Beccy Stables (from Sherwood Park, AB), who won Season 5. After his victory, Chong partnered up with Chef Alvin Leung to open up R&D Restaurant in Spadina, Toronto, specializing in Asian-Canadian food. Chong also guest starred in an episode of the third season and the fifth season.
