"Monkey Life" is a TV series documenting the work of Dr. Alison Cronin, Jeremy Keeling and their team at Monkey World. Monkey Life follows on from ITV Meridian's Monkey Business, based on the work of the largest monkey and ape rescue centre in the world. Nestled in Dorset, United Kingdom, this 65 acres (26 ha) sanctuary grew from a humble derelict pig farm, and is now home to over 250 primates from 21 different species.

Monkey Life - Old World monkey - Netflix

The Old World monkeys or Cercopithecidae are a family of catarrhines, the only family in the superfamily Cercopithecoidea in the clade (or parvorder) of Catarrhini. The Old World monkeys are native to Africa and Asia today, inhabiting a range of environments from tropical rain forest to savanna, shrubland and mountainous terrain, and are also known from Europe in the fossil record. However, a (possibly introduced) free-roaming group of monkeys still survives in Gibraltar (Europe) to this day. Old World monkeys include many of the most familiar species of non-human primates, such as baboons and macaques. Currently, 138 species are recognised, making Cercopithecidae the largest primate family.

Monkey Life - Classification - Netflix

Two subfamilies are recognized, the Cercopithecinae, which are mainly African, but include the diverse genus of macaques, which are Asian and North African, and the Colobinae, which includes most of the Asian genera, but also the African colobus monkeys. The distinction between apes and monkeys is complicated by the traditional paraphyly of monkeys: Apes emerged as a sister group of Old World Monkeys in the catarrhines, which are a sister group of New World Monkeys. Therefore, cladistically, apes, catarrhines and related contemporary extinct groups such as Parapithecidae are monkeys as well, for any consistent definition of “monkey”. “Old World monkey” may also legitimately be taken to be meant to include all the catarrhines, including apes and extinct species such as Aegyptopithecus, in which case the apes, Cercopithecoidea and Aegyptopithecus and (under a yet expanded definition) even the Platyrrhini emerged within the Old World monkeys.
