Presented by Suzy Klein, the programme shows how this environment allowed composers and performers to experiment musically and become the rock stars of their age.
No longer restricted by aristocratic patronage, they thrived creatively and became entrepreneurs, organising their own concerts, enjoying the wealth and fame that came along with it and eventually facing a dilemma that remains to this day - artistic credibility vs commercial success.
Composers to emerge during this time and featured in the episode include Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert, Berlioz and Liszt.
