Windmills of the Gods - Criticism in Spain - Netflix
In Spain, the novel was widely considered “a complete historical mess”. Aside from showing almost no knowledge at all about Spanish or Basque history and politics, the book has several “Basque” activists without any trace of the very characteristic Basque surnames, being instead generic Spanish surnames apparently chosen at random from historical and political figures. Some scenes were considered in Spain outright ludicrous (Spanish police assaulting convents in the name of a strictly conservative, national-catholic government; a completely wrong depiction of Pamplona, even with an imaginary rebellion; a highly inaccurate description of the festival of San Fermin; typical Andalusian cuisine in the Basque Country; and blatant geographic errors, to name a few). Critics in Spain were so fierce that the Spanish edition had to include a disclaimer page.
